If you’ve ever doubted life’s ability to thrive against the odds, step into the Gobelo Farm greenhouse - a bold experiment proving that with curiosity, care and… sponge pieces, even the stubborn sands of the Kalahari can bloom.
Sponges, you ask? Yes, sponges. It all began with a couple of sponges in a lunchbox, a few seeds tucked snugly inside and a sprinkle of water. Humble beginnings for what has become a vibrant hub of botanical experimentation in the heart of Hwange.
The greenhouse isn’t just about making plants grow - it’s part of a dream to position Gobelo as a leader in innovation and sustainability. Today, it thrives with greenery, from herbs that garnish plates at Gobelo Restaurant to fragrant spices adding unique flavours to every meal. Each plant carries a story of resilience, making every bite as memorable as your time here.
Of course, no good tale lacks a touch of drama. When we started on this, our forest neighbours - especially the crafty squirrels and cheeky monkeys - decided the greenhouse was fair game for their culinary escapades, turning our cherry tomato seedlings into an open buffet. But rather than fight nature, we adapted, fortifying the greenhouse with nets that even the sneakiest visitors can’t bypass. Now it stands as both a sanctuary for plants and a laboratory of innovation.
Visitors on our Gobelo Farm Tours can witness this green marvel firsthand, discovering how creativity and persistence transform challenges into opportunities. The greenhouse reflects a simple truth: “The grass is greener where you water it” - and in our case, even where you sprinkle it on sand.
Come for the farm-fresh flavours; stay for the greenhouse’s quiet charm, where every plant tells a story of hope, growth, and possibility.
