Just when we thought we’d seen it all…
Last week, Gwango hosted the biggest overland truck we've ever seen - a full-on hotel on wheels! With 33 guests on board, it was a mix of adventure and comfort like we’d never quite witnessed before. They set up camp at Mkwaina Camp in Gwango Heritage Resort, making the most of its bush setting before heading out for the day. Twenty-six of them went on an Estate game drive, while seven opted for an afternoon drive into Hwange National Park. After a day of exploring, we finally had a chance to sit down by the fire pit and talk about their journey.
The group hailed from Germany, Austria and Poland, bringing with them a spirit of adventure that matched their unique mode of travel. Their truck was as practical as it was impressive, designed to take them deep into remote areas, turning every journey into a shared experience of discovery rather than just a means of getting from A to B.
They told us that their rolling hotel makes it possible to travel to remote areas while still having everything they need with them - sleeping cabins, a kitchen, even bathrooms on board. Some had done similar trips before and raved about how their little cabins, while compact, were surprisingly comfortable. Meals were a mix of local and familiar foods, with breakfast staples like bread and jam and warm dinners prepared from fresh ingredients bought along the way. And when the weather was good, they set up outside, turning campsites like ours into open-air dining spots under the stars.
As they enjoyed a traditional dance performance right there at the fire pit, which they said rounded off their experience with a bit of culture to go with their time in the wild, they agreed that Gwango was one of the highlights of their journey. Their verdict? “Absolutely unforgettable.”
And yes, after hearing all about it, we can’t wait to hear what your experience is like if you ever travel in one of these. Or maybe one day, you will roll up to Gwango in your very own hotel on wheels! However you get here - in a Rotel, a safari vehicle, or just the trusty 4x4 - one thing is certain: there’s always an adventure waiting at Gwango.
