Kule Camp has come a long way

A little while ago, we introduced you to Gwango Kule Camp and shared the story of how a rather out-of-the-way corner of the Gwango property was being transformed into a self-catering camp. Well, quite a bit has happened since then! This place that we mainly used for storing equipment and sending our team on various assignments has gradually become a lovely little camp in the forest, and we are excited to share how far it has come.

For those who may not remember the story, Kule is a Nambya word meaning far. The name came from our own team, who had been referring to this part of the property as Kule for years. It was where they were sent when something needed doing, where some of our construction equipment was kept, and where the water pump supplying the elephants drinking at Mpofu Pan is housed.

The last time you heard about Kule, it was undergoing quite a transformation. Over the years, many of our guests had asked whether we would ever introduce self-catering accommodation at Gwango. It was a request we had heard time and again, and eventually, we decided to make it happen at Kule. Today, Kule has four beautifully furnished self-catering bungalows ready to welcome guests. Each bungalow has two bedrooms, one with a queen-sized bed and the other with two twin beds, making them a practical option for families and small groups travelling together. They also have en-suite bathrooms, a kitchenette, a lounge area and an outdoor dining space.

The idea behind Kule is to give guests a little more independence and flexibility during their stay in Hwange. You can prepare your own meals, enjoy time together in your bungalow and make yourself at home in the middle of the forest. It is also a more affordable way to enjoy a stay at Gwango, particularly for those travelling independently, families and self-drive visitors who prefer to have their own space.

Although Kule is a separate camp, guests are very much welcome to enjoy the facilities at Gwango Heritage Resort too. Our restaurant, bar and swimming pool are available to Kule guests, and you can also book and take part in the activities organised through the main resort. The two properties are approximately 700 metres apart. Because of the wildlife and safety considerations in the area, however, guests cannot walk between the camps and will need to make transport arrangements when visiting the main resort.

There is still more to come at Kule. We are working towards introducing campsites in early 2027, which will give visitors another way to experience this part of the Gwango property. It is something we are looking forward to, and another step in making Kule a welcoming option for different kinds of travellers.

It is quite something to look back at how this little corner of the forest started and see what it has become. We have spent years building and developing different parts of Gwango, and Kule has been another interesting chapter in that journey. We are happy to now be welcoming guests into a space that has been part of our story for so long.
