Some places have a way of drawing you back. Gwango Tamarillo Estate is one of those places. It has been part of our story for years. This was once Elisabeth’s childhood home that was left untouched for over a decade and has now been restored into a welcoming retreat for travelers passing through Bulawayo. The journey has been one of transformation and now we have a space filled with warmth, memories and the quiet charm of a place that has found its rhythm again.
Finding our place in Bulawayo
Coming back to Bulawayo felt like returning to an old friend - familiar yet full of new possibilities. Nestled in the Burnside suburb, Gwango Tamarillo Estate isn’t just a stop along the way; it’s a retreat where the city’s pace slows and the warmth of home takes over. Whether you’re here on a business trip, stopping over on a journey, or just looking for a quiet corner to breathe, we wanted to create a place that blends the ease of city life with the tranquility that defines Gwango.
There’s something about the way the lodge is laid out that makes it feel both intimate and open. The multi-storey building is surrounded by leafy gardens, with rooms designed to make guests feel at home. There’s no need to rush here. Mornings can start slowly on a private veranda, sipping a cup of coffee while taking in the peaceful surroundings. And when the day begins, Bulawayo’s museums, galleries and historic sites are just a short drive away.
The little details that matter
As with everything we do, we wanted Gwango Tamarillo Estate to be more than just a place to sleep. It had to feel right. Every detail at Gwango Tamarillo Estate has been chosen with that in mind. The rooms are simple yet inviting, with soft bedding, warm lighting, ceiling fans and private en-suite bathrooms stocked with everything needed for a comfortable stay. There’s free Wi-Fi for those who need to stay connected, a dining area for shared meals and a pool for cooling off in the afternoon sun.
For those needing a space for business, we also offer conference facilities to accommodate meetings and events. Need a private room for a small group or a larger space for a bigger gathering? We’re here to make hosting your event effortless and comfortable.
Beyond Gwango, Bulawayo has no shortage of places to explore. The Khami Ruins, the rugged beauty of Matobo National Park and the rich history housed in the Natural History Museum all tell stories of a land shaped by time. And just outside the city, game sanctuaries offer a glimpse of zebra, impala and the near-extinct rhino, reminding us that nature is never too far away.
A different kind of Gwango experience
Every Gwango property has its own story, shaped by the people who pass through and the moments they create. Tamarillo Estate is still writing its first chapters, but already, it feels like home. It’s a place of quiet moments and unexpected connections, where history lingers in the walls and new memories take shape every day.
