One of our most popular features at Gwango Heritage Resort is the Mkwaina Campsite. Interestingly, Gwango actually had its start as a camping destination. We never really intended to build a full lodge (with all the bells and whistles) - but visitors to Hwange National Park kept stopping by asking if they could camp on our land. Slowly the concept of camping at Gwango took off and the feedback we would always receive was that we have one of the most unique camping experiences. Our space is still wild and unlike any other…
We recall the first visits from Illona Hupe, publisher of the famous French travel guidebook, Petit Futé. This was a HUGE deal to us, putting us on the map as an official camping spot.. And indeed, it became (and still is) a source of so many referrals. Today, Mkwaina is busier than ever. In fact, the conversation in our management meetings is often about how we need to add more campsites at Mkwaina.
So what is Mkwaina..?? It’s a rugged space beneath the vast expanse of the African night sky where you can set up a tent…or park your camper. And the rest is pure adventure as there’s no telling who will stop by…
Most guests at Mkwaina Camp, bring their own tents, pitching them under the canopy of stars that seems close enough to touch. Like most of Gwango, the campsite is enveloped by a stunning teak forest, where the whispers of the wild are your nightly lullaby. But it’s not all wild! We’ve made sure your stay is as comfortable as it is thrilling. One of our first additions to the camp was the installation of quality ablution facilities - featuring flushing toilets and hot water showers (because even the wild at heart must clean themselves up from time to time). And, of course, no camping trip is complete without a proper braai (or bbq), so we’ve provided facilities for your grilling pleasure.
As for your neighbours at Mkwaina, let’s just say they’re the kind you won’t find anywhere else. Our friendly camp staff are always on hand to build a nice evening fire (firewood included) as part of the experience (and to keep you safe from those passing by). From cranky elephants to the ever-watchful lions - the wildlife here is as much a part of the experience as the campfire stories you’ll share. But rest assured, these wild visitors are more interested in their own adventures than causing you any trouble. If you’ve been following our previous blogs, you’ll know just how cheeky, fun and downright mesmerising our wild friends can be.
Because we are not located in Hwange National Park, there is another huge advantage of camping at Mkwaina. We don’t charge our guests any Park fees to camp here. And.. to top it off, after a day of exploring the nearby Park, if the idea of cooking doesn’t quite appeal to you, we’ve got you covered. A short walk from the campsite brings you to Gobelo Marketplace, our stand-alone restaurant where you can enjoy a delicious meal without lifting a finger (except maybe to raise your wine glass). Oh.. and you can also take a quick dip in our splash pool, which is all part of the Gwango experience.
So, whether you’re a seasoned camper or trying it out for the first time, Mkwaina Camp at Gwango Heritage Resort offers a perfect blend of wild adventure and home comforts. Come for the stars, stay for the stories, and leave with memories that will last a lifetime.
PS.. the word Mkwaina is a Nambya word meaning friend… so when you stay at Mkwaina.. You’re automatically a friend!
